Media Release - Opening of New Tennis Court Complex in Murrurundi - February 2008

Last modified: February 26, 2008 - 2:08 PM

Opening of New Tennis Court Complex in Murrurundi - February 2008

More than 70 happy people attended the official opening of the new tennis court complex in Murrurundi last Wednesday evening.

Councillor Nat Doonan welcomed the crowd and introduced Mayor of Upper Hunter Shire Councillor Barry Rose OAM who performed the official opening. Cr Rose gave a brief background to the project before unveiling the commemorative plaque and cutting the ribbon at the gate of the three new synthetic courts. Cr Rose described the courts as “the best tennis facility in the Upper Hunter Shire”.

Mrs Marion Norvill was invited to speak about the history of the tennis courts in Murrurundi. Her husband, the late Mick Norvill, was instrumental in the original clay court development which saw three courts established in one location. This was seen as a great improvement to previous days when people played on various courts around Murrurundi. A further all weather court development was completed in 1987.

Other members of the original club including Mrs Yvonne Mitchell and Mr Cyril Barwick were also there to see the new courts opened.

Hamish Neal from Tennis NSW was a real hit with the large number of young people who came along for the opening. There were games and exercises to develop skills as well as complementary packs from Tennis NSW to celebrate the event.

Councillor Doonan thanked the Council staff for the hard work they had put in to complete the project.

Many locals stayed on for hours to enjoy the new all weather synthetic surface. All reports were that the courts “play well” and some said the new courts are the best courts they’ve played on.

There was also plenty of interest in re forming the Tennis Club in Murrurundi. It seems there will be lots more happy times ahead for all ages at the new courts.
