2008 Festival of the Fleeces Promises Plenty for Everyone

Last modified: June 5, 2008 - 10:29 AM

An amazing array of activities with the famous Hunter Mutual Running of the Sheep and Festival Parade as a centrepiece will ensure the 2008 Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces is a truly memorable weekend.

The Committee has created a program jam-packed with events to please young and old, starting with the official festival opening at Merriwa RSL Club and a fashion parade on Friday evening.

"The 2008 Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces is set to be a weekend full of fun and celebrations. With the Hunter Valley nearly being washed away in 2007, the committee is making up for lost time and this year is set to be bigger and better than ever," said Festival coordinator Council's Tina Taylor.  "With events for the young to the young at heart and those wishing for some adventure, there will be something for everyone," she said.

"The weekend kicks off with Merriwa hosting a fashion parade on Friday night at the RSL. The Australian Wool Fashion Awards are presenting garments using local up and coming young talented models," Ms Taylor said.  "If fashion is not your thing, try the events at Merriwa Sports Club, Bogan Bingo starts at 8.30pm, and everyone will be in for some great laughs," she added.

"On the Saturday we kick the day off with the Scavenger hunt. This is a team based event and everyone will be searching for items that may or may not be found.

The festival will also have working dog displays, whip cracking, horse shoeing, scarecrow competitions, youth events, laser tag, a petting zoo and the children's favourite, Pooka the Clown.

"With many markets, local displays and the famous Running of the Sheep in Red Socks down the main street, the festival is set to be another fun weekend for all those that attend," Ms Taylor said.

"The Committee is looking forward to people from far and wide coming to Merriwa for the June long weekend to celebrate and support our little country town."

Ms Taylor explained the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces began in 1990 as a celebration of the region's historic association with the Australian Wool Industry.

The event will culminate with a fireworks display and youth events at Merriwa Showground ahead of an Old Time Dance at Merriwa Sports Club.
