Young Endeavour SchemeLast modified: June 11, 2008 - 4:24 PM
THE innovative Upper Hunter Shire Council Young Endeavour Scheme is fast gaining momentum with the support of community groups such as the Lions Club as well as individuals who have seen the transformation of local youth as a result of their journey. Information nights explaining how young people aged from 16 to 23 in the Upper Hunter Shire can be involved in the Young Endeavour Scheme 2008 will be held in Murrurundi at the Library from 5pm on Wednesday 11 June and in Merriwa at the Council Chambers from 7pm on Thursday 12 June. The voyage takes place from 2 to 12 December, from Adelaide to Geelong. At information nights last week, Lion Kevin Klose and Lion Ruthi Urbach talked about their experiences and involvement with the Young Endeavour at an evening hosted by the Lions Club. Upper Hunter Shire Council community services manager Donna Rea said Mr Klose spoke from a sponsor's point of view and Mrs Urbach from a parent's point of view. "It does not seem to matter from which viewpoint the message is coming from, the message remains the same, the experience is truly life changing for these young people who are lucky enough to be drawn to participate," Ms Rea said. "The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme is an awesome experience, and one which will give you skills for life. You'll learn not only how to sail a 44 metre, square rigged tall ship on the open sea, but skills in teamwork, leadership and communication. Sailing with 23 other youth crew means you'll also make a bunch of new friends," she added. "Our participants in previous years have returned saying that a Young Endeavour voyage is not a leisurely cruise, but it is challenging and exhilarating, and they met and lived with people from across Australia, from all walks of life, many of whom became close friends." Ms Rea said 2007 Ambassador Lucy Johnsen presented an overview of her experience sailing from Geelong to Sydney at the Aberdeen Information Night hosted by Aberdeen Lions Club. "At the end of the evenings there were young people eager to find nominators so they can be involved," Ms Rea said. Contact details |
