2008 Young Endeavour tripLast modified: September 23, 2008 - 3:17 PM
FOUR young men and women from the Upper Hunter Shire are preparing for the trip of a lifetime after their names were drawn from among 24 deserving nominees for the 2008 Young Endeavour trip. The quartet will sail on a 10 day voyage on the STS Young Endeavour from Adelaide to Geelong from 2 to 12 December. The Ambassadors for 2008 include Amelia Brayley, Debbie Belfield, Liam Harding and Cameron Zofrea. Amelia was nominated by Scone & District CWA. The Year 11 Scone High School student is actively involved on the school's student representative council and last year travelled to South Korea as part of a school cultural exchange. Keen young aviator and musician Debbie Belfield, nominated by Scone Lions' Club, was also thrilled when her name was drawn at a well-attended celebration dinner at Club Scone last Thursday evening. Debbie was the 2007 Scone Lions Youth of the Year and is involved in several bands throughout the area. In 2006, Debbie made history as Australia's youngest female solo pilot when she gained her aviation licence. Liam Harding, nominated by the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces committee, is a Year 11 student at Merriwa Central; Liam is completing a school-based traineeship in auto mechanics. He is also actively involved in Merriwa Youth Group, the student representative council and peer support group. Nominated by Scone Amateur Basketball Association, Year 11 Scone High School student Cameron Zofrea is a keen sportsman who has represented the school in sports including soccer, water polo, rugby league, touch football, basketball, athletics and swimming. Cameron participated in the Hunter and Beyond Student Leadership Conference at Newcastle University in 2004 and 2005 and the Hunter Aspiring Leaders Outward Bound Program at Canberra last September. Reserves are Cameron Binks (Merriwa District Progress Association), Zac Rahn (Scone High School), Hannah Purcell a(Scone & District Netball Association) and Madeleine Wykes (Aberdeen Community Caring Inc). The Upper Hunter Shire Council, with the assistance of the community, annually sponsors four berths for a 10 day voyage on the Young Endeavour. In the past 11 years 25 young people have participated. "Our scheme is a ‘one of a kind' as we are the only council who runs the scheme this way. With the support of the community and businesses, we have raised $18,272 for the scheme," Mayor, Barry Rose said. "The nominees really highlight the quality of the youth in our region, and it is just a shame we can't send them all," Cr Rose added. "We have seen our youth return from the Young Endeavour trip as confident and articulate young people keen to continue to develop their potential - and they all say it was the trip of a lifetime," he added. "It is a great way for council and the community to have a real connection with local youth and the dinner was definitely an evening celebrating the spirit of our young people." A highlight of the evening was an address by Young Endeavour Chief Petty Officer Lindsey Smith as well as a light-hearted presentation by previous Young Endeavour ambassadors Lucy Johnsen, Caitlyn David and Liam England. Gold sponsors included Riversdale Farm, Scone Lions Club, Hunter Mutual, Macquarie Generation, Mrs Jan Rose, Cressfield Stud and the Upper Hunter Shire Council. Sales from the Cadbury Chocolate Fundraiser held by the nominees raise $3,000. Silver sponsors were Muswellbrook Holden, Scone RSL Club, Scone Amateur Basketball Association, Rotary Club of Scone, Aberdeen Lions Club and The Scone Advocate. Bronze sponsors were Brooks Bros Engineering, Harvey World Travel (Scone) and Scone Chamber of Commerce Members. Nominations were received from all areas of the Shire including Aberdeen, Blandford, Cassilis, Ellerston, Gundy, Merriwa, Parkville, Rouchel, Scone and Wingen. Contact details |
