Highly Successful Inaugural Photography Competition

Last modified: September 24, 2008 - 9:30 AM

THE Upper Hunter Shire Council's photography competition is set to become an annual fixture following a highly successful inaugural event which culminated with an exhibition and awards evening at Scone RSL on recently.

Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Councillor Barry Rose said he was delighted with the response to the competition from Shire residents who submitted images of people, places, and buildings within the Shire.

"The theme was ‘the spirit of the Upper Hunter' and the entries received certainly reflected the diversity of our region and its signature events," Cr Rose said.

"Our aim is to start gathering a range of images we can use in publications to promote all that is great about our Shire and it is fantastic to receive photographs that reflect a range of perspectives from residents," he said.

"From the action at King of the Ranges, Festival of the Fleeces, the Horse Festival and events like the Kia-Ora concert to beautiful images of our environment, the standard of entries was wonderful," Cr Rose added.

Photographs had to taken by Shire residents and be taken within the Shire in the past 12 months.

Buildings category winner Denise Bell, of Aberdeen, said her interest in photography began when she was asked to photograph local Probus Club activities and subsequently had pictures published in a Probus magazine.

"After hearing about the competition, I jumped on the bus to Scone with my camera and took a stroll down Kingdon Street," said Ms Bell, whose image of the old court house theatre was a winner, while a portrait of Nancy Smith and a picture of pipers in the Horse Festival parade were highly commended.

Blandford-based entrant Traci Leon, whose two King of the Ranges images earned her a Highly Commended award, said she loved the thrill of taking adrenalin-charged sports pictures.

Maree Crabtree and daughters Tara and Erin, of McCully's Gap, said they'd had an enormous amount of fun taking pictures for the competition.

Harvey Norman Muswellbrook got behind the competition with manager Brendan Lambourne offering a print package worth $156 for each of the three winners, while Scone Instant Images provided a complimentary matte to assist with mounting images.

Winners of each category also received $100 as well as attractive certificates.
