Award Acceptance

An excited delegation from Murrurundi attended the Tidy Towns Awards weekend held at Dorrigo on 1 November and came home as over-all state winners in Category B,for towns with populations 351-1200.

After accepting the award on behalf of Upper Hunter Shire Council and the Murrurundi Community, Mrs Dorothy Whitby representing Murra County, said she "was thrilled to receive the award on behalf of the many active community groups in Murrurundi who have achieved so much in the past year".

Mr Peter Clark, who assessed Murrurundi in August 2008, noted in his report many features which make Murrurundi a sustainable community. Some of these are:

  • The beautiful school buildings at Murrurundi Public School which conserve the heritage of Murrurundi
  • The well placed and unique signage at each entry to town
  • The many galleries and artistic community members including an "Artist in Residence"
  • A town choir "the Murratones" formed in 2008
  • The work undertaken by many organisations and community members in both the "Turning the Pages" project and the Upper Pages Restoration program
  • The number of volunteers who provide information to tourists at the Visitor Information Centre
  • The Murra County Association which promotes local produce and holds monthly markets
  • The involvement of young people in local events
  • Council's support for young people's participation in the Young Endeavour Scheme.
  • Council's implementation of a Water Tank Rebate scheme.

Tidy Towns Program Manager, Mr Phil Kelly, congratulated Murrurundi on their outstanding achievements and encouraged the inclusion of more individual project applications in the future. Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities has award categories for schools environment, waste management, water conservation, cultural heritage and wildlife corridors and habitats, and civic partnerships.

The Assessors reports for Murrurundi, and Aberdeen which also entered Tidy Towns this year in Category C, are available by contacting Mrs Donna Rea, Manager Community Services with Upper Hunter Shire Council, ph 65401141.
