Council to consult the community

Last modified: December 5, 2008 - 2:32 PM

UPPER Hunter Shire Council will trial an innovative form of consultation where the community takes the lead. We are asking community members to request consultations to discuss specific issues important to the area. Acting Mayor Lee Watts said the new initiative would enable community members to set the agenda and discuss them with the right council representatives.

"We have been looking at ways to encourage communication between council and the community in a way that respects people's time and also prioritises the issues that are important to them," Cr Watts explained.

"We are calling for community members to register their interest in attending a round of consultations in early February 2009. The items raised at these consultations will be providing input into Council's Strategic Plan, for the next 5 to 10 years." Cr Watts said. "We will be requesting people to nominate the issues that they would like to talk about when they register; this is to ensure that we have the right Council representative present, to discuss their issues."

The locations and venues for the new-look community consultations will depend on the number of registrations received. "In the past consultations have been held in a number of towns and villages and unfortunately we've often ended up with more council representatives than community members at these meetings. We are hoping this change will result in a better consultation process, allowing for increased community involvement in the Strategic Plan's development," Cr Watts said.

She said at the consultations, community members will be asked to provide an insight into current issues affecting their community and to prioritise their concerns. This is an important step in the development of a sound Strategic Plan which is relevant to our Shire.

Please contact Jodie Phelps on 6540 1142 to register your interest in attending a community consultation, nominating the topics you would like to discuss. Areas for discussion include; rural roads and bridges, urban streets and stormwater drainage, children and youth services, the ageing community and mobility issues, parks and recreation, as well as environmental sustainability or other related topics.

Registrations of interest will be received during December, 2008 for consultations which will occur in early February 2009. Council looks forward to hearing from the community to participate in planning the future for our Shire.
