LOCAL families are urged to take the plunge for the fourth annual Scone Swim Club Lake Glenbawn Classic on Australia Day.

Participants from throughout NSW will converge on Lake Glenbawn to compete in a 1km, 3km and 5km swim but Scone Swim Club secretary Debbie Racklyeft said there would also be plenty of non-competitive participants enjoying the day.

"I think at the moment our youngest entrant is nine and our oldest is 65," she said.

"We have about 50 entries so far and we expect about 50 per cent on the day, so we are quite pleased," she said.

"This year we have our first-ever Masters Challenge - a group of 10 swimmers from Lake Macquarie will compete against our Masters Team, and then on March 1 we will compete at an event hosted by them at Sears Point.

"I think each team has to have a combined aged of more than 500, and the team with the lowest combined times wins a carton of wine. It is a friendly challenge and it should be a lot of fun," Mrs Racklyeft said.

"There are a lot of families doing the 1km swim -- you can use flotation or fins, and there will be plenty of canoes lined up along the course so if you get tired all you have to do is stick up your hand," she added.

"The blue-green algae situation has improved, they are sounding optimistic about that, and we are hoping that won't foil us on the day."

Mrs Racklyeft added that for the first time Scone RSL had provided major sponsorship, so attractive first prizes are on offer for various divisions.

Upper Hunter Shire Council sports participation officer Nicky Western, who plans to swim the 1km race, urged locals to come along and support the event.

"There has been so much interest from throughout the broader region, and it is going to be a great atmosphere with a barbeque and raffle and great refreshments for swimmers, it would be great if locals can really get behind it too," Ms Western said.

Registration is from 8am and the race kicks off at 9am.
