Amelia Brayley, Debbie Belfield, Liam Harding and Cameron Zofrea travelled as Upper Hunter Shire Ambassadors on the STS Young Endeavour for a voyage from Adelaide to Geelong from 2 to 12 December.

Three accomplished and articulate Upper Hunter teenagers captivated the Upper Hunter Shire Council at its January meeting when they provided an engaging account of their journey aboard the Young Endeavour.

Amelia Brayley, Debbie Belfield, Liam Harding and Cameron Zofrea went as Upper Hunter Shire Ambassadors on the STS Young Endeavour for a voyage from Adelaide to Geelong from 2 to 12 December.

Cameron said he would remember the adventure and the tasks he achieved forever.

"I will gladly encourage anyone to have a go at being a part of such a positive and rewarding scheme," he said.

"I've been asked a lot what I would take out of it, and what I learned most of all is how much I can do when I set my mind to it. I did things I didn't think I could do," he said.

Debbie said the voyage was "a life changing opportunity that we will never take for granted".

Amelia offered a "massive thank you" to sponsors and the Upper Hunter Shire Council.

In conjunction with a number of non-profit community and sporting groups, businesses and schools, the Upper Hunter Shire Council sponsors four young people annually to participate in the Young Endeavour Scheme.

Upper Hunter Shire Council mayor, Cr Michael Johnsen said a community sponsorship drive to provide four berths for the 2009 UHSC Young Endeavour Scheme (YES) would soon be launched.

"We are aiming to book the journey leaving Williamstown in Melbourne on 30 November and sailing to Sydney over 10 days," he said.

"If anyone is interested in supporting the 2009 YES scheme they should contact community services officer Jodie Phelps on 6540 1100, and young people who would like more information can contact our youth services officer Kylie Free on the same number," Cr Johnsen said.

Council's youth services officer, Kylie Free said the 2008 Ambassadors were available for guest speaking roles.

Ms Free said Amelia Brayley had been nominated by the Scone branch of CWA, Debbie Belfield was nominated by Scone Lions Club, Liam Harding was nominated by Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces committee, and Cameron Zofrea was nominated by Scone Amateur Basketball Association.

Their names were drawn from among 26 nominees at a celebration dinner on September 18.

"Our ambassadors successfully fought their fear of heights and conquered climbing the mast, worked as a team to achieve a positive result in extremely difficult situations and made life long friends with each other and the rest of the youth and Naval crew," Ms Free commented.

"They embraced the new challenges set before them and they were fine representatives for the Shire.

"The experience has helped them to develop leadership and team building skills which they will be able to use for the rest of their lives," Ms Free added.

"It is inspirational to see the impact the Young Endeavour experience has made on the lives of the young people that have participated in our area."
