Council Proposal to Enhance Pedestrian Safety in Merriwa

Last modified: June 5, 2009 - 8:06 AM

RESIDENTS and visitors to Merriwa will have a safer main street environment if a request by the Upper Hunter Shire Council will ask the RTA to consider extending the 50km/h speed zone along Bettington Street is successful.

At its meeting on Monday night, Council resolved to support a traffic committee recommendation to ask the RTA to consider extending the 50km/h zone about 200 metres west and 500 metres east in Bettington Street.  The street is part of the Golden Highway.

Civil Assets manager Jeff Bush advised if the request was successful, the speed zone would extended 200 metres on the western approach to include Rotary Park and amenities, and about 500 metres on the eastern approach to include the driver reviver rest stop and the entrance to the Merriwa Sports Club.

Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Michael Johnsen said the traffic committee was mindful of the expanded urban area of Merriwa.

"Speed limits must have a relationship to roadside development, pedestrian generation and road geometry and have to be practical for the environment they are in," Cr Johnsen said.

"Reducing the speed limit will improve safety for everyone, especially pedestrians."
