New Roundabout to Enhance Safety
Last modified: June 5, 2009 - 8:09 AM
SCONE will soon feature a permanent roundabout at the intersection of Liverpool Street and Main Street after the Upper Hunter Shire Council endorsed the final concept design at its May meeting.
Following a six week trial period and subsequent feedback, the Upper Hunter Traffic Committee recommended amending the configuration of the roundabout to eliminate the two lane western approach in Liverpool Street. The second change involves introducing a raised pedestrian crossing on the eastern approach in Liverpool Street, from the court house to the new administration centre.
Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Michael Johnsen said the trial period had enabled council to fine tune the concept plan.
"Council felt from the outset that incorporating a roundabout into the local area traffic management scheme would improve the safety and amenity at this intersection, without disrupting local accessibility," Cr Johnsen said.
"Due to the configuration of the existing intersection and the need to preserve Main Street as a wide vehicle detour around Kelly Street, the design has been adapted to accommodate bus and larger vehicle movements by incorporating the construction of a mountable mini-roundabout and associated splitter islands. The larger vehicles will be required to drive over mountable kerb islands or rumble bar treatments in the splitter islands to negotiate the roundabout," Cr Johnsen explained.
The new roundabout will cost $120,000 to construct.
