PARTICIPATING as a Gold Sponsor and supporting two nominees is immensely satisfying for Scone Lions Club members, with Club President Maria Musumeci urging the community to get behind the innovative program.

Each year, the Upper Hunter Shire Council coordinates a scheme that enables four young people aged from 16 to 23 to get on board Australia's sail training ship Young Endeavour.

"We have been involved for several years and we have seen the program go from strength to strength," Mrs Musumeci said.

"As a gold sponsor we are privileged to be able to put forward two nominees and it so exciting when one of their names comes out of the draw," she said.

"The kids come back and they are just so excited about what they have experienced, their enthusiasm is contagious and more and more young people from all over the Upper Hunter want to do it," Mrs Musumeci added.

She said the Scone Lions sought to support all spectrums of the community and the Young Endeavour Scheme was a very worthwhile youth project.

The 2009 scheme has attracted $6,580 sponsorship and has a $20,000 target to fund four berths on the famous tall ship, for a 10 day voyage from Williamtown in Victoria to Sydney, from 30 November to 10 December 2009.

Gold sponsors include Council, Mrs Jan Rose, and Scone Lions Club. Silver sponsors include Muswellbrook Holden, Scone Medical Practice, the Rotary Club of Scone, Merriwa RSL Club, and bronze sponsors include Harvey World Travel Scone, Scone Legal Solicitors, Brooks Brothers Engineering and Steel and the Scone Advocate.

To date, 11 nominations have been received.

Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Michael Johnsen urged the community and businesses to consider sponsorship and to nominate young people.

"The Young Endeavour Scheme is more than just an exercise in pushing one's personal boundaries; it truly provides a significant long term boost to the participant's ability to contribute positively in all walks of life," Cr Johnsen said.

"We cannot underestimate the affect it has on the young person's confidence and maturity and the resulting personal growth that helps them take the next step into adulthood," he said.

"A key responsibility of the ‘baby boomers' and generation x is to foster and develop leadership amongst generation y," Cr Johnsen continued.

"This will provide a measurement of success in ensuring we all meet the challenges of tomorrow and the Young Endeavour Scheme is a fantastic way for our community to collectively support our youth and help develop our leaders of tomorrow."

Nomination forms and information are available from Council offices or via Council's website - upperhunter.nsw.gov.au.
