War Memorial to Stay
Last modified: July 28, 2009 - 8:05 AM
The Upper Hunter Shire Council last night resolved to leave the War Memorial in Kelly Street Scone, where it is.
Council has been formally advised by the Scone RSL Sub Branch that it has withdrawn its original support to relocate the memorial at this time.
The Upper Hunter Shire Council has also advised that the ANZAC Day march will continue as usual, as has always been the case.
"Whilst this is disappointing from the community perspective, as the RSL Sub Branch was always a key driver in Council's plans, without that support, council will not proceed at this time.
"The benefits to the community as a whole and in particular, the ex-service men and women, were demonstrated and anecdotally agreed to by the vast majority of people in Scone.
"It was also agreed by most, including members of the RSL Sub Branch that the ceremonial services would be better placed at the new civic precinct.
"Council will continue to support the RSL Sub Branch in its ceremonial tasks and honour those service men and women that in the past and present, hold a special place in our society". Mayor Johnsen said.
