Council Moves Toward New Local Environmental Plan
Last modified: July 28, 2009 - 3:55 PM
THE Upper Hunter Shire Council will proceed toward a new consolidated Local Environmental Plan (LEP) that will establish the standards required for environmentally sustainable development and growth.
At its meeting on Monday night, Council resolved to appoint 10 nominees to a newly-formed Local Environmental Plan Community Advisory Committee.
Representatives will include former members Kim Murphy, Martin Nixon, David Paradice, Michael Burke, John Hill, Jan Wild and a representative of the Scone Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
New members include Ray Jacobson, Noreen Marshall and Ruth Hardy and the committee has been appointed for the term of the present Council.
Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Michael Johnsen said broad community representation was a vital component of development of planning requirements for the Shire.
He said a consolidated LEP was necessary as a result of the creation of the new local government area of the Upper Hunter, with LEPs from former Shires updated and incorporated into an overall strategy.
The committee has not met since last June when it recommended adopting the Land Use strategy, subject to some amendments. The Land Use strategy was amended and lodged with the Department of Planning last July, but Council has yet to receive advice it has been approved.
"The next phase of the project is the preparation of a draft Local Environmental Plan and accompanying Development Control Plan, " Cr Johnsen explained.
The Department of Planning has committed to provide funding of up to $95,000 of a total estimated cost exceeding $126,000 toward preparation of the new Local Environmental Plan.
