Upper Hunter Popular at Country Living Expo

Last modified: August 11, 2009 - 1:55 PM

A WIDE range of people are interested in making a ‘treechange' from Sydney to the Upper Hunter Shire and provision of employment or business opportunities and suitable accommodation is an essential prerequisite.  That's the view of Upper Hunter Shire Council's Economic Development Officer Sean Constable, who participated with Mayor Michael Johnsen in the three day Country and Regional Living Expo held at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney on August 7, 8 and 9.

Mr Constable said participating in the Expo was also an opportunity to raise awareness about what was on offer in the Upper Hunter.  "A lot of visitors to the Expo are familiar with the Hunter Valley and they have visited Cessnock wine country but they are not aware of where the Upper Hunter is and what it has to offer," Mr Constable said.

"There was a very good level of interest in the Upper Hunter - most of the people we talked to are at the stage where they are serious about moving."

He said a broad range of people, from singles in their early 20s to young families and retirees, expressed an interest in relocating.  "Some of it was treechange-driven, others were sick of the city and wanted to get out and look at what opportunities there were outside the city. Many were seeking a couple of acres for their family and to get some animals. Others were looking for opportunities within agriculture and the horse industries so the Upper Hunter is an obvious choice."  "They said ‘this is what we are looking for and if we can find a job and somewhere to live, we will move tomorrow'," Mr Constable said.

"So the challenge is for us to find employment opportunities and suitable accommodation. There was a range of skills among people we spoke with - and plenty of tradesmen looking to relocate."

Mr Constable said information provided by people who attended the Expo would be made available to stall-holders in due course through a detailed questionnaire and database maintained by the organisers.

The Upper Hunter Shire Council shared a double stand with Muswellbrook, Singleton, Cessnock, Maitland, Port Stephens and Newcastle councils.

"The Mayor and myself both thought it was a valuable activity for Council to be involved with, and having the stand as a whole of Hunter worked well," he said.
