Fruit Tree Owners Responsible for Control of Fruit Fly

Last modified: August 24, 2009 - 2:00 PM

The Upper Hunter Shire Council wishes to remind the owners of fruit trees throughout the Shire that they have a responsibility for ensuring that fruit fly are controlled on their properties. Fruit tree owners who are not willing or unable to control the pest should strongly consider removing the trees and replacing them with non-fruiting ornamentals.

Council's Director Environmental Services, Mr David Casson stated that "this is a timely reminder to fruit tree owners of their responsibilities and to ensure that appropriate checks for fruit fly eggs are undertaken" Mr Casson said that "there are products available to control fruit fly; or owners can simply remove all overripe and fallen fruit from around trees. Infested fruit should be placed inside strong plastic bags and exposed to the sun for at least three days or up to seven days if the temperature is below 30° C"

Further information can be obtained from the Department of Primary Industries regarding fruit fly and its control. The DPI also encourages individuals to report instances of neglected and abandoned trees on eg: vacant blocks, behind commercial premises etc as they form ideal breeding areas for the fruit fly.

Mr Casson indicated that the Queensland fruit fly causes millions of dollars of damage each year in our country. While it has not been a significant issue generally in our Shire, Council is seeking the cooperation of all fruit tree owners to undertake these simple measures to avoid or reduce the potential problems associated with fruit fly in our area"
