Residents of Upper Hunter Shire now have free access to Power Usage Meters so they can calculate how much energy each appliance in their house actually consumes. By better understanding energy consumption residents can learn to make simple changes potentially saving several hundred dollars a year and tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Through the FOCUS on Sustainability program, Hunter Councils and Upper Hunter Shire Council are providing residents with the opportunity to measure how much their household electrical appliances cost to run, by making Energy Reduction Kits free to borrow from local libraries.

Energy Reduction Kits include a Power Usage Meter, which calculates the power consumed by each appliance and a booklet containing advice and tips on how to make simple changes in behaviour, which will save people money and help the environment. The kits are now available from Scone, Merriwa, Aberdeen and Murrurundi libraries.

Mayor Michael Johnsen said, ‘The power usage meter is a simple handheld unit used to measure the electricity consumption and running costs of electrical appliances. The device can tell how much money it costs you to run your appliances every hour, quarter or year'.

‘The unit can even calculate the power used by appliances, like TV's, that use standby power. Standby power is nearly 10% of household energy consumption. Just by turning appliances off at the wall, households can save around $100 per year'.

‘By testing appliances around the home you can better understand the individual power demands of different appliances and pinpoint appliances that are energy hungry. By better managing appliances you can save money and help the environment. In fact I've recently set up my own home to turn all appliances off standby mode by one simple switch', Mayor Johnsen said.

The FOCUS on Energy Reduction Kit is available free to borrow from your local library.
