Medical Extensions to Proceed

Last modified: September 15, 2009 - 4:12 PM

THE Upper Hunter Shire will boast enhanced medical facilities by next April with locally-based Tilse Building Pty Ltd awarded a $637,444 contract to construct extensions to Scone Medical Centre.

Council has $500,000 funding from the Federal Government's National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program and the balance of funds will be provided by way of lease arrangements with Scone Medical Practice.

Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Michael Johnsen said as well as the extensions, Council would construct extra car parking spaces as required under the development consent.

The extensions will provide rooms for Hunter Imaging Group to house a CT Scanner and Ultrasound services.

There will also be five new consulting rooms for GPs and other allied health services.

"Hunter Imaging Group is keen to expand its service to the Upper Hunter Shire and the scanner is already purchased and awaiting its new home in Scone," Cr Johnsen said.

"The project will continue on the same basis as the current medical centre with no net cost to the ratepayer," Cr Johnsen said.

"This is a great outcome for residents and ratepayers because we will have significantly improved medical facilities, a local building firm involved, and the asset remains in community ownership.

"Work is expected to commence in the near future with a building period of about 26 weeks," he added.

Upper Hunter Shire Council leases the Scone Medical Centre to the Scone Medical Practice, who then sub-let to medical services such as the Hunter Imaging Group, Pathology and other allied health services.
