Michael Johnsen Acting Chair Hunter Councils

At its meeting today the Board of Hunter Councils resolved to appoint the Mayor of Upper Hunter Shire Council - Cr Michael Johnsen - as Acting Chair of the Board pending finalisation of a long term appointment later in the year.
The Board of Hunter Councils is the peak advocacy and coordination group for local government in the Hunter Region and draws its membership from the Mayors of the eleven council areas of the Hunter.
These council areas are Cessnock City Council, Dungog Shire Council, Gloucester Shire Council, Great Lakes Council, Lake Macquarie City Council, Maitland City Council, Muswellbrook Shire Council, Newcastle City Council, Port Stephens Council, Singleton Shire Council and Upper Hunter Shire Council.
"I am very proud to have been selected unopposed by my peers throughout the region for this important role. The Upper Hunter has never had a Mayor as acting or chair of the organisation and this endorsement by Mayors from the Hunter Councils is recognition of the Upper Hunter's role in regional policy making and strategic planning for the Hunter Region's future growth plans.
"I am particularly pleased that this is a strong endorsement of my ability to provide leadership and direction on behalf of the 11 Hunter Councils and the advocacy role of the position in dealing with both State and Federal Governments", Mayor Johnsen said.
In commenting on the acting appointment Roger Stephan, the CEO of Hunter Councils, said, "The Chairperson of Hunter Councils has a critical role to play in exercising leadership, giving direction and in acting as a spokesperson for local government and their communities in our region."
He added, "Cr Johnsen has already made a significant contribution to the Board of Hunter Councils as Mayor of the Upper Hunter and as Vice Chairperson. His appointment as Acting Chair of Hunter Councils is a gesture of confidence by the Board in his strategic insights and regional vision, and I have no doubt that he will prove to be an admirable leader in the coming months."
