Tidy Towns Awards for Murrurundi
Last modified: November 3, 2009 - 12:16 AM
MURRURUNDI'S robust bush spirit was recognized at the 2009 Tidy Towns - Sustainable Communities Awards held in Tamworth on the weekend with the Upper Hunter Township taking home three trophies.
After winning the overall Tidy Towns Award last year for its population category, Murrurundi township was runner-up this year (Category B - population 351 - 1200), with features such as a lively arts scene, emphasis on environmental conservation, and forward-thinking commercial sector ensuring the town again rated highly.
The Pioneer Cottage received the Highly Commended Award in the Bush Spirit Category.
The historic slab cottage was relocated from Timor to become a landmark attraction and popular destination for special events. It is run by the Murrurundi and District Historical Society in partnership with the Upper Hunter Shire Council and local organizations such as Murra County and the Lions Club.
Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Lee Watts paid tribute to the Pioneer Cottage committee, and particularly the efforts of well-known twins Gwen Alchin and Carmel Hughes for their efforts to maintain and promote the cottage.
"A recent challenge has been replacing leaky roofing and a proposed restoration of internal wall linings and improvements to drainage to conserve footings," Cr Watts said.
"The Pioneer Cottage Committee is working closely with Council's Museums Advisor Lynn Collins and Heritage Advisor Lillian Cullen to ensure that future maintenance and improvements maintain the integrity of the building."
"It's success would not be possible without the support of volunteers from the adjacent Visitor Information Centre who regularly show visitors through the cottage, as well as local icons Gwen and Carmel, whose effort and enthusiasm ensures the stature of this local attraction continues to grow," Cr Watts said.
"It takes more than 700 volunteer hours annually to achieve this and that in itself is worth celebrating," Cr Watts added.
